From The Mayor's Office: May State of the Village

We are excited in the Village to see the coming of summer and relaxation of COVID restrictions. Our businesses, service organizations, and entertainment venues need this relief.

In July, the Dick's Sporting Goods Open will celebrate the 50th anniversary of professional golf in our community. The event is a cornerstone of the Village's tremendous and unique heritage.  Old Dominion will perform on the concert stage Friday, July 2, 2021. Check the event website for more information.

Many people are getting the Village spruced up before the event. The Endicott Proud Beautification committee is leading efforts to maintain and expand our gardens. Many organizations within the community are volunteering to adopt garden areas. Please, look for opportunities to support the beautification events and to adopt gardens in your neighborhood.

The Civic Youth Group "Yes Leads" planned and implemented a clean-up event for Washington Avenue on Earth Day. This event was very well attended and was noticed by many in our community, including Senator Fred Akshar, who personally thanked the student organization. "Yes Leads" teachers and students made a presentation to Endicott Proud.

Our Carousel horses are now in place at the Northside Park. We expect to have everything in working order by early June. We will be participating in the "Ride the Carousel Event" this summer. Buttons, cards, and brochures for the event are available. There is significant community interest in this event. To add more excitement, Endicott Rotary celebrated their 100th year of service by purchasing an organ that is the same model as the original organs for our carousels. Thanks to Endicott Rotary for their long-standing role in our community.

The Village and the Town of Union are working with a new committee dedicated to planting trees in our community. The committee is working with professionals at Cornell Cooperative Extension to pursue grant opportunities and develop Arbor Day celebrations.

Our committees for the transformation of Washington Avenue are identifying design alternatives to present to the general public. Our Avenue businesses are getting involved. We are placing a high priority on providing a strong sense of security and safety for the Washington Avenue area.

iM3NY held a zoom Town Hall meeting to present their progress and to address questions. The company has secured funding for the first gigawatt of production of Lithium-Ion batteries. This first phase will require about 150 personnel. Ultimately the company will produce 32 gigawatts and require 1,200 employees. Many of the corporate partners and suppliers will develop a local presence. BAE, iM3NY, and a growing number of clean energy startup companies represent a significant development for our community and region. These companies also represent supply chain opportunities for other companies in the Southern Tier.

Byrne Dairy is on track to move to Endicott at the former Friendly's site following new building construction.

The Village is now partnering with Broome County Emergency services for emergency response alerts. We will contact Broome County when we have an emergency like a boil water advisory. The County will initiate a reverse 911 phone call system for landlines and contact the media.

Folks that rely on cell phones and other modes of communication can register for NY-Alert for emergency notification. The Village will continue to post emergency notifications on the Endicott Facebook page.

Now that COVID restrictions are being lifted, we are restarting our visits with businesses and organizations on Fridays. My secretary and I call this program "Where's the Mayor on Friday?". This is a great opportunity to receive feedback and to discuss the progress that is taking place.

We are pleased to report that the Village Board approved the Benchmark Resolution as the next step to our "Clean Energy Community" designation. The Village receives an initial grant of $5,000. We have developed a plan with Cornell Cooperative Extension to make further advancements and qualify for higher grants for projects to reduce emissions and save operating costs.

Please take the time to enjoy our Village this summer and the many events that are developing. Get involved with our plans for the transformation of Washington Avenue. Step by step, the Village is making strides. We sincerely appreciate all of the volunteers that are supporting the process.
