Village of Endicott to Launch Service Line Identification Project to Meet EPA Requirements
The Village of Endicott is taking proactive steps to ensure the safety and quality of its drinking water by launching a new Service Line Identification Project. In the coming weeks, all Village of Endicott residents will receive an important letter from the Village Water Department asking for assistance in determining the material composition of their water service lines. This initiative is part of the Village’s effort to comply with updated EPA regulations to reduce the risk of lead exposure in drinking water.
Why Is This Important?
Under recent updates from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), all public water systems must identify and document the materials used in service lines that connect homes to the main water supply. The goal is to pinpoint any lines that may contain lead, potentially contributing to lead exposure if the water becomes corrosive. Lead service lines have been identified as a potential source of lead in drinking water, especially in older homes.
While the presence of a lead service line does not necessarily indicate elevated lead levels in your drinking water, it does present an increased risk that the Village is committed to addressing.
What to Expect:
1. Look for a Letter in Your Mailbox: Residents will receive a letter from the Endicott Water Department explaining the project and providing instructions on how to identify your water service line material.
2. Simple Steps to Identify Your Line: The letter includes a step-by-step guide on performing a scratch test, a QR code for additional resources, and contact information to schedule a free inspection if needed.
3. Reporting Your Findings: Once you have identified the service line material, please report your findings to the Endicott Water Department. This information is vital for our records and compliance with EPA requirements.
Next Steps and Support for Residents:
- Free Service Line Inspections: If you are unsure about your service line material, contact the Endicott Water Department at (607) 757-2445, Option 3, to schedule a quick inspection.
- Reducing Lead Exposure: The Village will provide recommendations for reducing potential lead exposure, including using certified water filters, cleaning faucet aerators, and using cold water for cooking and drinking.
- Replacing Lead Service Lines: The Village is committed to replacing any lead service lines found on public property. Homeowners replacing their portion of a lead line are urged to notify the Water Department for coordination.
Your Participation Matters
Your cooperation in this project helps us ensure that Endicott’s water remains safe and complies with federal safety standards. The data collected will allow us to take necessary actions to minimize the risk of lead exposure and keep our community healthy.
